The Nupe Kingdom was one of the most significant political and cultural powers in the Middle Belt of present-day Nigeria. Known for its riverine trade, military strength, and outstanding craft traditions, the Nupe state flourished from the 15th century until the 19th century. The Nupe (traditionally called the Nufawa by the Hausas and Tapa by the neighbouring Yoruba) are an ethnic group native to North Central Nigeria.
